Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome is a hormonal condition that is commonly seen in women of the reproductive age. While the exact cause of the condition is yet undetermined, the condition results in infrequent periods & painful periods; excessive levels of male hormone levels leading to excess facial & body hair, acne, and male-pattern baldness.

The common symptoms associated with PCOS include:

  • Excessive weight gain

One of the more serious complications of PCOS is known to be severe liver inflammation caused by fat accumulation in the liver. Excessive insulin intake, hereditary factors and excessive production of androgen are factors that further aggravate PCOS. For diagnosing the condition, doctors will rely on physical examination.

Blood tests and an ultrasound to determine PCOS. Once diagnosed, a patient will be required to make changes to lifestyle to reduce weight and take measures to regulate the monthly menstrual cycle. Additional medication may be prescribed based on your specific factors.

The treatment options for polycystic ovarian syndrome focuses on the management of the specific symptomatic challenges faced by a woman – these include infertility, hirsutism, acne or obesity. The specific treatment plan will involve lifestyle changes and/or clinical intervention. A weight loss program with a low-calorie diet combined with moderate exercise activities is one of the key lifestyle changes recommended.
