Right ventricular assist device (RVAD)

Right heart failure is a common complication after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. This can be managed by temporary right ventricular assist device (RVAD) implantation. This type of failure can lead to severe haemodynamic instability and organ failure. An RVAD pumps blood from the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery. This is the artery that carries blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen. An RVAD is inserted during a standard sternotomy.
