Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts are little sacs of fluid found in the ovaries or on its surface and these are common amongst all women. However, in some cases, these can rupture and cause serious complications. Bloating of the pelvic region, pain and heaviness in the abdomen are the common symptoms associated with ovarian cysts. Anyone experiencing sharp and sudden pain of the abdomen accompanied by fever or nausea must consult a specialist.

Ovarian cysts develop as a consequence of the monthly menstrual cycle, these are known as functional cysts and are the most common type of cysts. The other types of cysts are must less common and are not related to the menstrual cycle. Cysts that develop post-menopause might be malignant and can pose a risk of developing cancer. The rupturing of cysts leads to severe pain and internal bleeding that leads to ovarian torsion.

The common symptoms associated with ovarian cysts include:

  • Lower abdomen & pelvic pain
  • Fullness or heaviness in your abdomen
  • Bloating

The common causes associated with ovarian cysts include:

  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Pregnancy

  • Previous ovarian cysts

The treatment for ovarian cysts depends on the age, type and size of the cyst, as well as the symptomatic manifestation. Given that mostly cysts can be harmless and do not interfere with the normal functioning of the reproductive system – a wait and watch policy is often preferred. However, if the symptoms are severe then hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills, to keep ovarian cysts from recurring may be recommended. In extreme cases, surgical removal of the cysts may also be explored.
