Colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure undertaken for the close examination cervix, vagina, and vulva. This is undertaken to look for possible signs of any diseases of these organs and it is done using a special instrument called a colposcope. In most cases, the procedure follows abnormalities detected during a pap test.
Colposcopy is a relatively easy and risk-free procedure and is regularly performed across the globe. However, certain risks are inherent with every medical procedure, these include – heavy bleeding, infections, and excessive pelvic pain. Following the procedure, immediate doctor consultation is recommended should you experience fever, chills or bleeding.
Prior to your colposcopy, it is good to avoid
- Scheduling it during periods
- Engaging in intercourse a day or two prior
- Using tampons a day or two prior
- Applying vaginal medication
